Thoroughbreds and jockeys get the spotlight in racing but aren’t the only stars on the track. A group of horses with secret identities, like Clark Kent, are the heroes behind the scenes. These are the track ponies. They’re equine professionals walking along with each racehorse, ensuring the show goes smoothly. We want to showcase the secret lives of these remarkable horses and introduce you to horseOlogy’s resident track pony because not all heroes wear capes.

The Unseen Champions of Calm

Track ponies, sometimes retired racehorses themselves, serve as the calm amidst the storm of excitement that defines horse racing. Their job, though less heralded, is no less critical. They are the equine equivalent of a backstage manager, ensuring that the young, often fiery thoroughbreds reach the starting gate in a composed and focused state. This involves leading or accompanying them during the post parade and to the starting gate, offering a reassuring presence that helps mitigate the younger horses’ nervous energy.

These seasoned veterans possess a calm nature, a trait not just beneficial but essential in the high-octane environment of the racetrack. Imagine them as the babysitter, guiding their young charges with a composed demeanor that says, “I’ve been there, done that, and you can too.” Their job is a blend of mentor, friend, and guardian, showcasing the profound bond that can exist between horses.

Pokey: horseOlogy’s Resident Curmudgeon (I mean, Track Pony!)

Our resident track pony at horseOlogy is no ordinary equine. Pokey is in his 20s, although no one is exactly certain. In his semi-retirement, he only has to make a track appearance for the ones who need a little extra attention. And he’s always with us at the sales at OBS. He spent a few years with Jena Antonucci at the race track, and before that, he was the “main squeeze’ in the NYRA circuit with Miguel Gutierrez, the head outrider. Pokey is great with the young horses, and having him around is so much fun.

He’ll throw you a grumpy face and paw when he has too much work or is low on snacks, which is so relatable. But he’s happy to be rewarded with treats. (Also, relatable.) He will always keep his eye on the horses and still thinks he has it in him to catch a loose one some days.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane – it’s A Track Pony!

As we pull back the curtain on the secret lives of track ponies, we celebrate not only their contribution to the sport of horse racing but also the unique bond they share with their thoroughbred charges. At horseOlogy, Pokey embodies the spirit of these incredible equine professionals, proving that sometimes, the most significant heroes are the ones working quietly in the background, ensuring the stars can shine their brightest.

So, the next time you marvel at the spectacle of horse racing, spare a thought for the track ponies, the unsung heroes who play a pivotal role in the drama and excitement. Their story is one of quiet dedication, a reminder that equines have a deep connection to one another.
