Every August, the horse racing world has its eyes on one place: Saratoga Springs, New York. And every August, so do we.
Saratoga is home to one of the most famous race tracks in the country and every summer it also hosts some of the most important horse sales of the year. For horseOlogy, it's one of the most exciting times on our calendar. Here's why.
Two Sales, One Special Place
Each August in Saratoga, Fasig-Tipton, one of the oldest and most respected horse auction companies in the world, holds two different yearling sales. A yearling is a young horse that turns one on January 1 according to the thoroughbred industry, that hasn't started racing yet.
The first is called the Select Sale. This is considered one of the most elite horse sales in the country. Every horse in it has been hand-picked based on pedigree and physical quality. Think of it as the invitation-only version. Not every horse can get in, and the price tags reflect that. The graduates of this sale include some of the biggest names in racing.
The second, and the one that drives a lot of our excitement, is the New York-Bred Yearlings Sale. This sale is specifically for horses that were foaled in New York State. And right now, there has never been a better time to be paying attention to this sale.
What Makes a New York-Bred Special?
In horse racing, where a horse is bred and foaled matters — a lot. New York has one of the strongest state breeding programs in the country. Horses that are foaled in New York are eligible for extra races, extra prize money, and special bonuses that horses from other states simply don't qualify for.
New York invests more than $65 million every year in purse money and awards specifically for New York-bred horses. That means more opportunities to run, more money to be won, and more ways for owners to see a return on their investment.
On top of that, racing at Saratoga and Belmont Park is some of the best in the world. Having a horse eligible for that circuit, with extra financial incentives built in, is a real advantage.
How This Fits Into What We Do
At horseOlogy, we do two things with the horses we buy at this sale. The first is pinhooking — buying a young horse, developing it, and selling it later at a profit. The second is racing — keeping horses in our program and running them for our partners.
New York-breds work beautifully for both. For pinhooking, buyers at the next sale know the value of the New York-bred eligibility as it's built into the horse's worth. For racing, those extra races and bonus opportunities mean more chances to compete and more ways to earn.
Katie and Jena spend weeks preparing for this sale. Getting new owners excited for the upcoming season, studying pedigrees that look to fit our program, and doing the homework that most people never see. When they walk through the barn in Saratoga, they're not just looking for a pretty horse. They're looking for the right horse.
