By late August, Saratoga starts to quiet down. The crowds thin, the sale barns empty out, and the horses head off to their new homes. It would be easy to think the season is winding down. In our world, it's just the opposite. August in Saratoga is the opening act — and Kentucky is where the story really picks up.
What Saratoga Gave Us
There's nothing quite like Saratoga in August. The energy of the sale grounds, the history of the track, the sense that everyone who loves this sport is in one place at one time — it's a special few weeks every year. For us, it's also where a lot of our New York-bred story begins. New York's breeding incentive programs make these horses especially interesting from a commercial and racing standpoint, and Saratoga is where we get to see that pipeline firsthand.
The Road to Kentucky
As Saratoga wraps up, our attention turns south to Lexington, Kentucky. Keeneland September is the next major stop on the yearling calendar, and it's one of the biggest sales in the world. Different track, different barns, different energy entirely — but the same goal: finding horses worth building a future around.
Why Two Sales, Not Just One
People sometimes ask why we don't just pick one sale and stick with it. The honest answer is that Saratoga and Keeneland offer different things. New York-bred yearlings come with their own set of incentive programs, purse structures, and earning potential that make them a compelling piece of the puzzle. Kentucky-bred yearlings, on the other hand, come from the deepest, most competitive breeding pool in the country, with a long track record of producing top-level talent. Being in both places means we're not limited to one type of horse or one type of opportunity — we go where the right horses are, wherever that happens to be.
What's Ahead in September
Keeneland September runs for nearly two weeks, and there's a lot that goes into how a sale like this actually works behind the scenes. We'll be sharing more about that soon.
