Keeneland September isn't a single afternoon at the sale ring. It runs for nearly two weeks and includes thousands of horses. Understanding how it's organized helps explain why it's such a massive undertaking — for the sale company, and for everyone walking the barns.
What Are "The Books"?
To manage a sale this size, Keeneland divides it into numbered sections which we call "books." Each book is essentially its own mini-sale within the larger event, with horses grouped and scheduled across the two weeks. Book 1 runs first, followed by Book 2, and so on, with each book bringing its own group of horses to the ring.
Why the Order Matters
The books aren't just a scheduling tool — they roughly reflect pedigree and timing. Early books tend to feature horses with more prominent pedigrees and draw the biggest crowds and buyers. Later books offer a wider, deeper pool of horses. Neither is better or worse — they're simply different parts of the same sale, each with its own rhythm and opportunities.
What Is a Bloodstock Advisor?
Walking into a sale of this scale without a plan can be overwhelming — which is where a bloodstock advisor comes in. A bloodstock advisor is someone who helps evaluate, select, and bid on horses on a buyer's behalf, drawing on years of hands-on experience to know what to look for and where to look for it. Jena and Katie have spent years doing exactly this, and it's a service horseOlogy offers directly. If you're searching for a particular horse or type of horse, they're available to serve as your bloodstock advisor throughout the process.
You can learn more about this service on our Adviseology page.
A Two-Week Marathon
People are always amazed when they hear just how many horses Jena and Katie actually see over the course of the sale. Long days, barn after barn, session after session — it adds up to an enormous number of horses evaluated in a very short window. It's part of what makes finding the right ones feel less like luck and more like the result of a lot of careful, tiring, unglamorous work.
Keeneland September is a marathon, not a sprint — for the horses, the sale company, and everyone walking the grounds looking for the next good one.
